Cam McAzie was born in a remote fishing village in Western Australia, April 1972.With a whaler for a father Cam spent his second year of life on a whaling station in South Africa after the closing of the Albany whaling station in Australia. After returning to Australia Cam was sent to a prestigious college for distinguished young gentleman, namely Scotch College where he was forced to play the bagpipes for seven years. Cam found in his first year that he excelled faster and further then his fellow peers without practicing as much as he should have. In his graduating year at Scotch he was elevated to rank of “Pipe Major” which is effectively the leader of the band.
After leaving school Cam ventured to Sydney, Australia to search for his new station in life, having no skills and too young to work in bars, poverty and approaching starvation drove him to play bagpipes in the streets, or in this case, Circular Quay , which I might add is a daunting debut for a novice street performer. Cam made seventy five dollars in thirty minutes and it was at that moment he realised he may have found himself a promising future.
Upon returning to Perth Cam started playing the streets of Perth and Fremantle, finding very generous audiences wherever he went. It was in 1996 when he met two fellow street musicians and formed the now internationally recognized band, “The Kilted Generation”. After the release of their debut album , “Music for the kilted generation” the bands reputation and demand went thru the roof , being invited to play with internationally renowned band , Shooglenifty and at their earliest peak supported Savage Garden at the soon to be demolished Perth Entertainment centre.
The band released its second album, “Liverdance” in 2004 and set off to share it with the country, the Adelaide fringe festival being their first triumph. With the resignation of their first drummer, TKG hired a new one and set out on their first international tour, taking in spectacular places such as Canada and Europe, the streets were paved with gold wherever the boys went. In 2005 TKG made their second trip to Europe where the Dulcimer player fell in love and left the band to live in Europe, so, effectively the band was over and Cam was alone. After a long period of depression and several councilors Cam hit the streets again to find that his people still loved him, so, we come to now, late 2007 Cam is back in black and renamed, “The Badpiper” and thanks to the donations of all of you wonderful people he is back in the studio and working on his third album that will without a doubt blow the minds of local and international listeners. The album is hoped to come out just before Christmas 2007 and then will be dragged all over the world. Once again from the heart of his bottom Cam would like to thank all of his previous audiences for enjoying his music and supporting his cause, without any of you, none of this would have been possible, keep the dream alive!
